The star-studded 24th annual Screen Actors Guild Award, celebrating acting achievements in film and TV over the past year, saw dark comedy Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri scoop the top prize on Sunday.
Frances McDormand was named best actress for playing an angry mother in the Fox Searchlight film and Britain's Gary Oldman won best actor for playing wartime leader Winston Churchill in Focus Features Darkest Hour.
Having also won at the Golden Globes victory, Oldman will now be a favourite for the Academy Awards success.
He beat out competition from his "old sparring partner" Denzel Washington and fellow Briton Daniel Kaluuya.
"I am honestly and truly thrilled and overjoyed to be in this room tonight," Oldman said.
"I'm so deeply, deeply honoured and proud to receive this magnificent award, god bless you all."
Allison Janney won for her supporting actress role as a demanding mother in independent ice-skating movie I, Tonya, while Sam Rockwell was named best supporting actor for his performance as a dim-witted police officer in Three Billboards.
Nicole Kidman, 50, won for playing a battered wife in HBO's female-centric TV series Big Little Lies.
"How wonderful that our careers today can go beyond 40 years old. Twenty years ago we were pretty washed up by this stage in our lives. This is not the case now," Kidman said.
And Claire Foy won actress in a drama series for her portrayal of the Queen in The Crown - though the actress wasn't there to collect her award.
James Franco, a best actor nominee for The Disaster Artist, did show up after missing the recent Critics' Choice Awards but skipped the red carpet.
The actor has been keeping a low profile since describing allegations of sexual impropriety against him by five women two weeks ago as "not accurate."
The star-studded SAG ceremony took place after two days of marches by hundreds of thousands of women throughout the United States.
Host Kristen Bell said women were having a "watershed moment" as she kicked off the two-hour awards show, which was marked by speeches about female empowerment in the face of a sexual misconduct scandal that has swept Hollywood.
The organisers announced an all-woman line-up to present the awards, including Oscar-winner Lupita Nyong'o, who accused Weinstein of harassment, and Olivia Munn, one of the actresses to accuse director Brett Ratner of sexual misconduct, which he denied.
The annual ceremony is seen as a good indicator for the Oscars because actors are the largest group in the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, judges of the Academy Awards.
