BG FMH Car Charging Station - SH

Two stations for charging electric cars are in a parking deck at Frederick Memorial Hospital. The stations are for staff and visitors to the hospital.

Recommendations for expanding electric vehicle charging infrastructure in Frederick would prepare the city to be a small part of a much bigger network.

There are currently 420 plug-in electric vehicles registered in Frederick County and only eight publicly available charging stations inside the city limits. However, a majority of drivers’ charging needs are not expected to fall on the city.

Although not in Frederick, Royal Farms does have chargers at some of their gas stations, and you do pay for it. Sheetz is installing Tesla chargers in some of their PA locations. It is fine to charge for the electricity. Maybe I missed it, but I didn't see where it said the people would be getting charging for free.

I agree that I don’t want to pay for someone’s electric. Let them charge at home. You also can guess that whomever gets there first won’t be moving their car for others to use, they’ll just camp out there. The whole thing needs a lot more thinking before more is done.

My 2012 had a button you could push and it would show all the charging sites close by.  There are also web sites here are two of them for electric vehicles in Frederick County..

It doesn't state here, but level one is usually a 110 charging station and any wall outlet will give you 110.  Level 2 is 220 and level 3 is 440.  Level 1 used to take the Leaf about 6 hours to get 20 miles of charge.  A level 2 will charge about three times faster and a level 4 will charge in 1/2 hour - if your car is equipped to handle it, mine was.  Almost all the dealers allow free charging, if they don't have one of their own cars charging there.  Some other sites are also free.  Many of those not free charge $1/hr. which is very high as three hours at home would only cost about $.35.  So, a public level 2 line would cost about three times as much as charging at home.

A level 2 line, installed at home was costing about $2,500, not worth it unless you are doing a lot of daily driving.  There are also solar charging stations, Linganore Winery has two lines, free.  Some sites allow free charging, if  you call in advance.  If in doubt about availability, always call in advance.  And some are just blocked by cars not charging or cars left to charge longer than needed.

And who is paying for this electric what a joke

DickD

That will be up to the City of County, depending upon whom they belong too. They could be free, initially, to encourage more EV's.  If you have never driven an electric car, go to a dealership and ask to drive one, it is no joke.

it the person charged for the electric at the charging station? After all you can't pull up to the gas station and get free gas. Having a business provide to charge your laptop or phone is one thing, but unless the user is charged for the electric needed to charge a car would be a big expense.

Not really, the Leaf was rated the equivalent of 106 mpg. For $13 a month on a home line, I could drive about 600 miles. The more you use the AC, heater, etc. the more electricity you use, And I did use them. Sometimes you can get by just using the heated seats.

Add a couple of downtown air pumps for bicycles, too.

I suggest a public/private partnership to fund and provide a Hydrogen reformer station. My thoughts are to sign up commuters interested in moving to the next level; which allows fueling similar to a current gasoline vehicle. Each interested party would front a down payment to support the cost of the reformer. The region would benefit from being on the cutting edge and by reducing green house gas issues. It would also provide a real comparison on the practicality of both charging stations and Hydrogen stations.
